Quick Blogging Tip: Check your blog in different browsers and resolution sizes.
Did you set up your blog using Internet Explorer? Check out what your blog looks like on Mozilla, Chrome and other browsers. Do you have a large monitor? Go find a small laptop and see what it looks like on that. Or vice-versa. If you generally blog on a small NetBook or laptop get on a large monitor and check what it looks like on larger resolution. 85% of users are on a screen higher than 1024×768. About 6.5% are on a resolution of 1680×1050. That is a huge difference. You want to be sure your blog does not show up all wacky on a big screen.
Have a friend with a Mac? Ask them if you can jump on Safari to view your blog. You might be surprised. I literally had a heart attack when I saw what my blog looked like on an older version of Internet Explorer. It made me cry it was so horrendous. We take transparencies for granted, but there are still a few people that are holding out with very outdated browsers and all they see is white boxes.
Here are some examples of how different a blog can look this blog is set up as a small content area — see how you can see more and more of the background:
But what if you have your content set up for BIGGER than 1024, notice how you get a horizontal scroll of the smallest 1024×768 blog size:

Such a great new feature! I LOATHE browser compatibility issues…I’m fortunate that I can view my site across Mac and Windows, across every browser….I’ve found problems that way before, and it’s inspired me to keep things fairly simple. I had a cute font recently that only showed in newer browsers…so that went away. *shakes fist at internet*
I recently learned that people on smaller computers couldn’t read my blog. I tried to fix the issue. I switch between Firefox and Chrome, so luckily those are usually compatible.
Hummm never though to look at different computers!! Good idea!
Funny you should mention browser differences. On my Safari browser, Disqus doesn’t load comments. If I want to read the comments, or post one of my own, I have to load the page in Firefox. I’m not sure if this has something to do with the way my Safari is configured or if it’s a Disqus issue. I’ve had this problem with every version of Safari that I’ve used and I believe I’m currently running the latest version of the browser. Do you have any idea what’s going on with that?
I also tend to have problems with Safari not loading the Linky widget, or occasionally not loading an email subscription widget and for blogs on WordPress, I can usually see the comments, but I can’t comment on my Mac in either Safari or Firefox. For those, I have to go to my iPhone or iPad to comment (which is really weird since they are also running Safari, but for some reason the comments work on the i device, but not on the Mac).
Firefox and Chrome are generally cooperative but IE gives me headaches!
I am one of those people whose monitor has a resolution of 1920×1080 and you wouldn’t believe how many people’s blog backgrounds are cut off and have huge white spaces on the sides.
I love this new feature! And yes, ugh, there’s no way to get things perfect across all older browsers, but I think, thanks to your awesome design, I’m okay on the newer ones. With varying resolutions.
Great tip! I’ve seen a few sites that look wonky on my Macs…
