Fifty Shades of Grey Chapter Seven

We now stand with Ana as she is rendered speechless by the Red Room of Pain.  We’ve got … well first we have ambient glow ?? and a womb-like effect ??? and then a big wooden cross on the wall ?? Not impressed yet, I’m thinking Church?

Ok, no sorry, there seems to be restraining cuffs on the cross, iron grid system suspended from the ceiling, ropes, chains, even some glinting shackles. Poles, spindles, paddles, whips, riding crops and feathery implements.

“It’s called a flogger.”

I’m in shock. What is the appropriate response to finding out a potential lover is a complete freaky sadist or masochist?

So, what should she do, run, walk, or jump into those shackles? You would think at this point he would give her a good excuse that she should slip into some leather and bind her hands behind her back…maybe a little sweet talk? But, no, not Christian…

“It means I want you to willingly surrender yourself to me, in all things.”
I frown at him as I try to assimilate this idea.
“Why would I do that?”
“To please me,” he whispers as he cocks his head to one side and I see a ghost of a smile.

And that seems to be what she wants. She wants to please Christian Grey. I would have told him where he could stick his flogger…

“In very simple terms, I want you to want to please me,” he says softly. His voice is hypnotic.
“How do I do that?” My mouth is dry, and I wish I had more wine. Okay, I understand the pleasing bit, but I am puzzled by the soft-boudoir Elizabethan-torture setup.

And then the scene is set and Christian shows her exactly what he expects of her. He brings her around and points out fun things like where her room will be (Friday through Sunday), where his room will be and the fact that the won’t have any sort of relationship out of the whole dominant submissive routine. It really is such a bummer, but through the whole thing, he gives her little tidbits…makes her think that he might want more even though he’s saying that he only wants a certain thing.

Typical male…so while he is mentioning contracts, separate sleeping arrangements, fucking only, he also says other things to confuse Ana and make her HOPE:

“Anastasia, I’ve told you. There’s something about you. I can’t leave you alone.” He smiles ironically. “I’m like a moth to a flame.”

But, of course, before they can go any further…they have to go over the Rules. I’m not going to go into them in detail. But it’s a lot of Dominant does this, Submissive does that…Dominant says this, submissive, wears this, eats this, exercises this way…we are introduced to Hard Limits and Soft Limits.

It’s quite an eye opener, especially for a girl of Ana’s experience and then Christian is so clinical about it. That is until the revelation comes out, when he asks her details about what she likes and doesn’t like:

“You’re a virgin?” he breathes. I nod, flushing again. He closes his eyes and looks to be counting to ten. When he opens them again, he’s angry, glaring at me.

Ready to move on to Chapter 8 of Fifty Shades of Grey?

Right off the bat it is obvious he’s going to drag her away and boink her…but of course we have to find out why she’s a virgin…and get another S.A.T. word!

My subconscious has reared her somnambulant head.

And that subconscious of hers has decided to come up for air just in time for Christian to so romantically sweep Ana off her feet:

“Come,” he murmurs.

“What?”

“We’re going to rectify the situation right now.”

“What do you mean? What situation?”

“Your situation. Ana, I’m going to make love to you, now.”

Now isn’t that romantic?

Well, there goes the fact that he doesn’t make love. Christian, you sure know how to give a girl mixed signals! But, of course Ana is ready and willing and full of her usual:

I flush…oh my…wishes do come true.

And what follows is a sexy, but rather tame love scene that you can read in most romance novels. With a startling revelation for Ana at the end of it that, well, more of her usual absurdity…

Oh my. That was extraordinary. Now I know what all the fuss is about.

Light Bulb! <– sound effects

And more sex…and some more. It’s like quick bursts of multiple orgasms….

Ana wakes to find him playing the piano, another ‘Twilight’ companion scene and there is a very warm exchange between the two of them. Christian has just given Ana the biggest lead on that she could ever hope for. Even after that he joins her in bed…something that he also said he never does. It gives Ana the impression that he cares more for her than the other women he’s had as his subs. She’s also glimpsed a part of him that he keeps hidden and bottled up, its one of the first clues that Christian Grey is not a happy person, no matter how much wealth or toys he has. Granted from his lifestyle, most could probably guess that happiness was few and far between in his life, but Ana and her inexperience will take awhile to figure it out.

I still haven’t figured out why I like these books. Especially as I do these recaps. Even the parts that I’ve marked as my own little “oh mys” on reread, I’m all like “huh?” It is crack. You know it’s bad for you…but you keep sucking on that glass pipe. *Sigh*

  1. HA! I’m glad you’re enjoyed the CRACK!! LOL. I was addicted to these books while reading and still am. Luckily I have a support group of blogger buddies just as addicted! LOL. I hope you continue with these books.;) Thanks for the funny commentary!

  2. It is crack. You know it’s bad for you…but you keep sucking on that glass pipe. *Sigh*
haha exactly! These are book crack. So good! I seriously was reading all night. Something about it kept me so intrigued.

  3. I am LOVING this series. Never wanted to know about the Twilight thing…didn’t figure it out until I was on Book 2. haha I didn’t make the connection, mainly because I loathed that saga.

From a psychological standpoint…I think this book is beyond interesting. Some points are cheesy…Inner goddess & her subconscious…but I think they were necessary to show her inner turmoil (or whatever). I think there could have been a less cheesy way to do it. But oh well. I’m on Fifty Shades Freed and I freaking LOVE Christian and Ana’s transformations.

Glad you like the book even though sometimes it IS baffling about WHY we like it so much. :)

  4. Yes, it’s crack! or what is it? I finished the trilogy and I still can’t point my finger on what made me liked them so much or what kept me reading without being able to put them down. Was it just curiosity? or just the simple fact that I wanted to believe that Christian was a better man, even tho. it’s super clear that his f**ed up. At this point I was thinking, whats behind him? what made him this way? but I also started to get the feeling that he really, really liked Ana.

  5. I’m super loving these posts! These books are sooo bad, but addicting! I’m currently waiting on Book 3 from the library, and dreading the conversation with my super nice librarian who almost always comments on my book choices…

  6. Well at least this crack is legal…LOL
    Loving it!
And isn’t that the way you always dreamed of losing your virginity?

  7. I’m more addicted to your recaps than I think I could ever be to the book. LOL. This guy sounds like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Or just a dude with a really bad memory.

And they seem to smile. A lot. Are we sure this story isn’t taking place in an institution?

And what’s with the “Oh my. That was extraordinary.” Such a pleasant, tame response to losing the V. I’d say that line is more appropriate for someone who just sat down to have a nice cup of tea and crumpets and was pleasantly surprised by fresh preserves than having S.E.X. for the first time.

And if it was just so magical without any of the usual, shall we say, discomfort, it makes me wonder if she was faking the whole innocent act….

I freaking love your recaps. Can’t wait to see what you think of what’s up… no that doesn’t sound right… whatever comes… nope… how about the next chapter. :)

    • Rachel, I absolutely loved your reply! Had me “crack”ing up! I agree with your comment about Ana losing her V. Not a very realistic thing to say! Holy shit might have been better.

  8. I’ve just finished the trilogy – I LOVE all of it. I’m trying to ignore the Twilight comparisons that pop up in my mind – although I loved the Saga, i don’t want these two to mix up in my memory. I want to keep them separate. As you say – You know it’s bad for you…but you keep sucking on that glass pipe – exactly, it’s so addictive despite of all its faults.

  9. I think I’ll be reading your recaps from now on instead of starting from where I left off. You’re still at the parts where I found the book interesting and amusing. I liked it up to a certain chapter that made me put it down. Maybe you’ll be able to re-cap the chapter in a way that’ll make it sound more pleasant and I’ll finally (maybe) pick it up again.

  10. I cannot for the life of me figure out why I like these books. Cannot. I’ve tried. I’ve tried to justify it to myself, to others, to anyone who will listen. I hate everything about these books, on many levels. But I have not been so consumed by a book in ages – if ever. If I’m not reading, I am thinking about it, wishing I was reading it. It’s ridiculous.

And I was up until 4 am reading. FOUR AM! (It’s 7:30 and I’m now up with my 3 year old, who wants to go, go, go!!)

(And for the record? Early in the second book I finally quit making the Twilight comparisons – I know they are there, but it’s just not in the front of my mind anymore.)

  11. I haven’t read these books, still undecided, but I am so enjoying your chapter by chapter read along. This was a great idea! Thanks for the posts. :)

  12. Yaaay, i’m glad your enjoying the Fifty drug :-) crack for sure, you know its bad but you love it anyway.

  13. My wife read the first and shared some of the scenes with me. I have to admit, they were…interesting to say the least. She is reading the second book now and from what I can tell she is enjoying it but she has commented that it is very different from the first. I believe she is half way through it so maybe it will surprise her. It will be interesting to hear what she thinks about the second.

  14. This post is made of awesome!

I can’t stop reading either though, so what does that say about me? I’m on Fifty Shades Freed. I tried to stay away… but I guess I like books that feature really rich, ridiculously hot rich guys who stalk and dominate their love interests. *sigh* I’m pretty sure NOW has me on some kind of shiz list.

  15. That is probably the best way to describe these books…crack! haha Honestly, I find most fanfic to be kind of like crack, so it didn’t really surprise me that Fifty Shades was, too! haha

And I agree, Christian gives off a tonne of mixed signals. :P But, you can definitely already tell that Ana isn’t like her other subs, and I kind of liked how there was a bit of mystery around that, and that you kind of were trying to figure out it all with Ana.

I’m loving your read-a-longs though, and that you’re including pictures! :D haha

    • I guess this would be my first fanfic read, so I’ll have to take your word for it. I can understand how they would be addictive though.

      • They definitely are! Especially the really good ones. Some are really well written…and those ones get you hooked enough to read the ones that aren’t well written at all. haha

  16. Loved your recap! I just now finished chapter 8. I’m honestly not sure how I feel about this book yet. On the one hand, I do enjoy good sex scenes, sexual tension, romance, etc. But I don’t know.. so far I’m too weirded out/annoyed at Christian to be thoroughly enjoying the book. He’s too much of a control freak. I can understand wanting to dominate in the bedroom and even a bit of BDSM.. but when that translates into day-to-day activities (like telling Ana she *HAS* to eat, or she *HAS* to sleep now, or she *HAS* to wear certain clothes, etc.) that just annoys me.

So I guess for now I’m reserving judgement. I look forward to reading the rest of your recaps as I progress through the book. I’ll probably read the chapter on my own and then read your post about it :P

  17. As I read your recaps I’m like OMG it’s dreadful, but for some reason it’s making me want to read it.

  18. I has read it and It’s not that good for past experience but the book makes you want to read on :o

    • I stopped, I have to start it up again…these read-alongs are very popular it would seem.

  19. I’m not sure what it is so addicting either. I struggled through the first half, but quickly finished the second half of the book…with the strong urge to read the next book just to find out why Christian is so f#@%*ed up. LOL Yes, I may end up reading the other 2 books… *sigh*
