Review: Legacy by Molly Cochran

PJV Quickie:
The quality writing of ‘Legacy’ by Molly Cochran was surprising and I found myself drawn in to the plot and characters almost immediately. An interesting plot, deep relationships between characters and a depth to the storyline that kept me intrigued made ‘Legacy’ a much needed respite from the usual YA novels about a witch, a boarding school and a cursed legacy.

Review

‘Legacy’ by Molly Cochran was a surprise to me, mainly because I read the synopsis and first paragraph and it ended with an eye roll. “Nothing new here,” was what screamed at me from the synopsis. Boy was I wrong! ‘Legacy’ is the story of 16-year-old Katy Jessevar who is being forced to attend a boarding school because her father supposably wanted to be rid of her — and yes the school is free because she is a legacy (as a parent I totally understood that!). Moving from Florida to gloomy Whitfield, Massachusetts is not what Katy would consider a good idea. Especially when everyone seems to know her business the moment she sets foot in the town and the people and students of Whitfield are anything but normal. Then, to make matters worse everyone also seems to hate Katy, especially a boy Katy can’t seem to keep her eyes off of, Peter.

Yes, yes, I know. It sounds overdone. But, Cochran’s writing and the intricacies of the plot make up for it. Do I think everything could have been flushed out better? Yes, I think parts of the plot could have been expanded on, especially the relationship with Peter and Katy. But, I enjoyed reading Cochran’s writing and the way everything flowed together. It was entertaining, Whitfield was a unique creation and Katy and Peter were enjoyable characters. That was enough for me. I didn’t expect the next great epic novel, but what Molly Cochran delivered was a highly enjoyable, entertaining and touching young adult novel that I think will do well with the teen market. If you are into witches and boarding schools and epic love, this is the novel for you. If you like to dissect plots, don’t enjoy the usual author trappings and not-so-original ideas, maybe you might want to sit this one out.

Recommendations:

Recommended for fans of Young Adult novels and paranormal romances. This is a safe novel, there is some sexual content but nothing flagrant or inappropriate and there is even repercussions. Recommended for teens 14+
